Back of the photograph

Martha Cooper’s photographs of children at play in the Lower East Side were taken in 1978 when as a young photographer she earned her living providing the New York Post with human interest pictures.  It was while taking these pictures that Cooper first became aware of graffiti and began the series of pictures of street and subway art that has made her an internationally famous photographer.  Cooper’s photographs of LES children were featured in the ABC No Rio book where they helped illustrate a Tim Rollins essay about the changing Lower East Side.    Given her exceptional status as a photographer (Cooper is co-author of Subway Art which has sold more then 500,000 copies worldwide), this evocative, signed, limited edition print produced specially for Gallery 98 is a real art bargain.
