Gallery 98 was founded in part to help promote the legendary artist group Collaborative Projects Inc. (COLAB), whose activities in the 1980s still resonate in today’s art world. COLAB organized the Real Estate Show and the Times Square Show (both in 1980), and was intricately connected to two influential alternative spaces: Fashion Moda in the South Bronx and ABC No Rio in the Lower East Side.
Interest in these 35-year-old exhibitions is at an all-time high. Here, for example, are two scholarly articles that appeared just this month: Stephen Zacks’s “Where Can We Be? The Occupation of 123 Delancey Street,” in Places Journal, and Francesco Spampinato’s “Colab Again,” in Stedelijk Studies. This fall, Printed Matter will also be publishing the much-anticipated A Book about Colab (and Related Activities).
Art and ephemera associated with COLAB can be viewed and purchased in a special exhibition and on the inventory page at Gallery 98.
