Interview Magazine, Record Cover Art and More
When it comes to Art Ephemera, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is unsurpassed. Along with the usual exhibition announcements, posters, and publications, there are also his commercial works and his forays into popular formats like film, television, and magazine publishing.
Inspired by the upcoming exhibition Andy Warhol — From A to B and Back Again at the Whitney Museum (November 12 – March 31), Gallery 98 has compiled a full listing of its available Warhol ephemera.
Of special interest are back issues of Interview Magazine, which Warhol began publishing in 1969 and remained involved with right up to his death. The magazine specialized in interviews of actors, musicians, and artists by fellow celebrities. After 1972, the covers by Richard Bernstein, currently the subject of an exhibition, Fame, at Deitch Gallery (ending October 27th), gave the magazine instant recognition.
Also of interest is a selection of some of the record covers designed by Warhol, including the 1951 cover for The Nation’s Nightmare, as well as other early record jackets done when Warhol was still primarily working as a commercial artist.
