CELEBRATING STUDIO 54
Anton Perich’s NIGHT Magazine, Issue 1, September 1978
Next month, the Brooklyn Museum will be celebrating New York’s most infamous nightclub of the 1970s with the exhibition Studio 54: Night Magic, from March 13 to July 5. One of the artists featured in the exhibition will be Anton Perich who frequently made photographs at Studio 54 and also published NIGHT, a magazine dedicated to New York City club life. The first issue was devoted exclusively to Studio 54.
As the publisher, sole photographer, and art director of this first issue of NIGHT, Perich captured Studio 54’s glamour and debauchery, filling the magazine’s oversized pages with photo-collages of attractive, well-dressed, and sometimes famous club goers. This rare first issue of NIGHT serves as a lasting tribute to a decade of New York City club culture, and to the aesthetic revolution in art and fashion that it fostered.
Gallery 98 has recently acquired three copies of NIGHT‘s “Studio 54 Special.” Two of these copies have been signed on the cover by Perich; the third is signed by Perich on the “undercover” (page 3), which shows model Patti Hansen (future wife of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards). Visit Gallery 98’s online exhibition, Anton Perich’s NIGHT, which features these signed copies of Issue 1, as well as later issues of the magazine with expanded club coverage.
