Gallery 98’s collection of the East Village Eye can be traced back directly to the accumulated inventory that the Eye had in storage when it ceased regularly publishing at the end of the 1980s. At one point, Gallery 98 had nearly every Eye issue. While this is no longer the case, we can truthfully state that we still have the largest Eye inventory anywhere.
Most Eye issues are expensive because of their rarity. However, our inventory also includes a few issues that survived in quantity because of the way the Eye was originally distributed. Given that there were always extra copies printed and, as it was impossible to predict how many copies of an issue would sell at each distribution point, copies were often returned and placed in storage. What we are offering now, at a bargain price, are the ten issues that, by chance, we have in multiplicity.
Founded in 1979 by Leonard Abrams (1954-2023), the Eye published 72 issues before it stopped regularly publishing in 1987. Fortunately, this overlapped with one of the East Village’s most influential and fascinating periods. The Eye covered it all – music, art, fashion, literature and politics. Today, the Eye archives are preserved at the New York Public Library, which is testimony to the newspaper’s importance, and assurance that it will continue to be a part of our city’s cultural history.
