Working closely with the artists and musicians who were at the center of East Village culture in the 1970s and 1980s, Gallery 98 offers collectors and institutions rare objects that bear witness to one of New York’s most creative periods.
We have recently replenished our supply of the East Village Eye, Leonard Abrams’ DIY monthly that from 1979 to 1989 chronicled all the cultural changes unfolding downtown. In addition to a pristine copy of issue #1, we can once again offer the November 1982 Eye with Phase 2’s illustrated history of New York graffiti (the Eye claims to have been the first publication to use the word “hip-hop”), and the hard-to-find April 1986 issue with its East Village map supplement and early cover story complaining about the perils of gentrification (what else is new?).
