“FLAYING OF THE UNJUST JUDGE”
The title of the 1987 exhibition by Julian Schnabel in the poster above may have political resonance today, but it actually comes from The Recognitions, a 1955 novel by William Gaddis about art, forgery, corrupt art critics and spiritual truths.
This Schnabel poster is part of a large collection of art gallery posters from the 1980’s and 90’s recently acquired by Gallery 98. Stand-outs include posters by Nicole Eisenman, Nan Goldin, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Sarah Lucas, Robert Rauschenberg, Faith Ringgold, Edward Ruscha, Julian Schnabel and Christopher Wool.
