Among the works featured in the exhibition Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip Hop Generation at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (October 18 – May 16) is the videotape “Graffiti / Post Graffiti,” a rarely seen program first screened on the Learning Channel in 1984. While other films on graffiti from this period focus on the phenomenon as subway art, “Graffiti / Post Graffiti” documents how certain artists who were associated with the graffiti movement started exhibiting and having success in art galleries.
“Graffiti / Post Graffiti” was filmed at Fashion Moda, Fun Gallery, Sidney Janis Gallery, and Tony Shafrazzi Gallery. It includes interviews with Charlie Ahearn, Patti Astor, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fred Brathwaite (Fab 5 Freddy), John Matos (Crash), Stefan Eins, Futura 2000, Keith Haring, Sidney Janis, Sandra Fabara (Lady Pink), Dolores Neumann, Hubert Neumann, Rammellzee and Tony Shafrazi. The program also features work by Lee Quinones, Henry Chalfant, Christopher Ellis (Daze), A-One, The Arbitrator Koor, Kenny Scharf and others.
“Graffiti / Post Graffiti” is part of ART/new york, a long running videotape series on contemporary art founded by Paul Tschinkel. From 1981-85, Marc H. Miller (of Gallery 98) collaborated with Tschinkel as interviewer and writer.
Tschinkel has recently made “Graffiti / Post Graffiti” available in full for online viewing through the run of the Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip Hop Generation exhibition.
