Daniel J Martinez, “I Can’t Ever Imagine Wanting To Be White”, Metal Button, Whitney Biennial, 1993

In his review of the 1993 Whitney Biennial, the New York Times critic Michael Kimmelman took the show to task for privileging “political sloganeering and self-indulgent self-expression.”

This key work from the 1993 Biennial captures the politicized spirit of that Biennial. Daniel J Martinez substituted his own tags for the tags generally used by The Whitney Museum as entrance. Most tags were segments of the phrase “I can’t ever imagine wanting to be white.” This is one of the rare tags that included the entire phrase.

It even made the cover of the May issue of Artforum.
