Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Touch Sanitation Show, Performance Announcement, 1984
As confirmed by her celebrated recent retrospective at the Queens Museum, Ukeles has been a major pioneer of art as social practice. Ukeles’s “Touch Sanitation Show” represented the culmination and public debut of her years-long “Touch Sanitation” project. The exhibition consisted of two concurrent multimedia installations, at the 59th Street Marine Transfer and at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts. The opening featured the notable performance “Marrying the Barges,” a choreographed “ballet” of eight boats in the Hudson River.
