Marc H Miller at Howl! Happening, October 19th
Artist and curator Marc H Miller will be talking about his life in downtown New York City at Howl! Happening on Saturday, October 19th. The occasion is the unveiling of an updated version of his website 98 Bowery, 1969-89, a picture memoir of the 20 years he lived in a Bowery loft observing and participating in the genre-changing transformations taking place in art and music.
Drawing from the site’s archive of photos and video clips, Miller will recount stories about Harry’s Bar and CBGB; the seminal 1978 Punk Art show; collaborative work with Bettie Ringma, Curt Hoppe, Alan Moore, and Paul Tschinkel—all residents at 98 Bowery; his year in Amsterdam; and the varied roles he played in the East Village art scene, and in the rise of hip-hop culture in the 1980s. The 98 Bowery website has been visited by more than 600,000 people.
Miller is well known as the curator of the Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk exhibition at the Queens Museum (2016), and for his 1982 video interview with Jean-Michel Basquiat in Paul Tschinkel’s Art/new york series. 98 Bowery’s online store, Gallery 98, has helped to revive interest in vintage art ephemera from the 1960s-90s.
Miller is a scholar (Ph.D., Institute of Fine Arts, NYC) and a counterculture provocateur (his participatory art series Draw a Penis and Vagina is 98 Bowery’s most popular page). Underlying it all is his understanding of the roots of contemporary culture in the 1970s and 80s, and the direct link between the interactive strategies that emerged in art then and the current world of selfies and reality television.
