Gallery 98 is a site for art historians as well as for collectors. Vintage announcement cards, posters and gallery catalogs track an artist’s career giving insight into the broader artistic world they inhabit. Through our online exhibitions, email newsletters, and search aids, Gallery 98 strives to make this history accessible. When items in our inventory sell, we mark them sold, but keep them posted so that visitors can continue to have access to a full history of particular artists and art movements.
The art ephemera of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 – 1988) is of special interest driven not only by his phenomenal success but also by the way his work brings together different segments of the art world. Cards show him exhibiting in nightclubs, pop-up spaces and in the toniest art galleries. He is connected with artists as diverse as A-One, Adrian Piper, Anselm Kiefer and Cy Twombly. Because Basquiat’s life was short, each of his exhibitions has added significance. Every piece of Basquiat art ephemera from the years he was alive is important.
Gallery 98’s online exhibition “A Survey of Jean-Michel Basquiat Ephemera” includes only items that have been part of our inventory. This exhibition, which we first mounted in summer 2019, has now been significantly expanded by the many new top-tier Basquiat items that Gallery 98 has acquired over the last few months. Most of these items have been sold but a few are still available. |
