Perusing Gallery 98’s inventory of thousands of announcement cards, posters and other art ephemera is like a trip through the history of art from the 1960s – 90s. Every art movement, gallery and artist is represented allowing visitors to explore the art that interests them the most.The traditional designation of February as Black History Month puts the emphasis on the cards and ephemera connected to artists of color and the continuing importance of the subject of race in art.
Gallery 98 has created a focused section that highlights Black art history during the last decades of the 20th century. Here you will find announcements and posters from the Studio Museum in Harlem, Just Above Midtown, and the Jack Shainman gallery; ephemera connected to Faith Ringgold, Kerry James Marshall, and Jean-Michel Basquiat; and promotional posters for art exhibitions about apartheid and the legacy of Malcolm X.
