Gallery 98 has just added a large bus-stop poster to its online exhibition on fashion photographer Bill Cunningham’s work for DETAILS Magazine from 1982-90. This huge 47 x 69 in. poster advertises the March 1989 issue of DETAILS, which included 111 pages of Cunningham’s photography and reviews of the Spring collections, shot in Paris, New York, and London. Issue highlights include shows by Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and the short-lived, Paris-based, African-American designer Patrick Kelly (1954-90).
Bill Cunningham was one of the dominant voices at the old downtown DETAILS before the magazine was purchased by Condé Nast in 1990. He later became famous for his long-running, weekly New York Times column, “On the Streets.” He is currently the subject of a feature-length documentary film The Times of Bill Cunningham. Nearly all of the issues of DETAILS containing articles by Cunningham are for sale in Gallery 98’s online exhibition.
