Selling Polaroids is a picture book for many audiences. Drinkers and dive-bar aficionados will certainly be pleased. But it is also for fans of Amsterdam and the libertine spirit that the city continues to embody today. Mostly though, it is a book celebrating the freewheeling lifestyle that artists enjoyed in the late 1970s and early 80s, a period when art and life intermixed, and it was often impossible to tell where one ended and the other began. Selling Polaroids is about Bettie and Marc’s “walk on the wild side,” the year they lived on a houseboat opposite the Anne Frank House, photographed for money late into the night, and knew every bar in town.
Copies of Selling Polaroids can be purchased directly from Gallery 98. All books ordered before Christmas will be signed by Miller with a memorial inscription for Ringma, who died in 2018. Copies can also be purchased through Printed Matter in New York, Arcana Books in Los Angeles, and First Light Books in Austin, Texas. Customers in Europe can order the book through Lecturis.
