People have many reasons to be interested in art ephemera — a type of collectible that also has the advantage of being small, easy to store, and modestly priced. Many collectors follow specific artists, but others just appreciate catchy images that they can casually display on a bookcase or coffee table.
Since Gallery 98 caters primarily to art enthusiasts, we generally organize our inventory by artists, galleries and art movements. But our holdings are also searchable by thematic categories that are not necessarily art related. This week’s email newsletter features four particularly popular themes: Politics, Animals, Fashion, and Nudes & Pinups.
Politics
Banksy, Stop & Search (West Bank Wall, Palestine, 2007), Keszler Gallery (Southampton, NY), Card, 2012. Size: 7.5 x 7.5 inches. Available for Purchase.
This card showing a large wall mural with an Israeli soldier being searched by a young girl is from an exhibition in the upscale Hamptons. Much to Banksy’s dismay, the mural was removed from it’s original location, the wall that separates Israel from the West Bank.
Malcah Zeldis, Amadou Diallo (2002), Group Exhibition of “Jewish Folk Artists of Our Time,” Andrew Edlin Gallery, Folded Card, 2003. Size: 5 x 7 inches. Available for Purchase
Amadou Diallo, an unarmed 23-year-old Guinean student, was shot in a deluge of bullets by four policemen who mistakenly thought he was a rape suspect. The acquittal of the policemen in the subsequent trial set off a wave of angry protests.
Animals
Tracey Emin, This is Another Place, Modern Art Oxford, Card, 2002. Size: 5.25 x 6.5 inches. Available for Purchase
Emin’s art explores all aspects of her life with compelling frankness.
Rosemarie Trockel, Lucio Amelio Gallery (Napoli), Card, 1994. Size: 6.25 x 9.25 Inches. Available for Purchase
In 1994 the German conceptual artist Rosemarie Trockel was working on a series of “animal homes” that playfully imagine dwellings for animals.
Fashion
Issey Miyake and Cai Guo Qiang, Pleats Please, a detail from the Fold-out Brochure with Sleeve Jacket and Card, 1998. Size: 22 x 10.5 inches (brochure unfolded). Available for Purchase
For this line of clothing, innovative Japanese designer Issey Miyake collaborated with the Chinese artist Cai Guo Qiang who, at the time, was working with gunpowder.
Comme des Garcons, Six / Sixth Sense, Number 1, Magazine, 1988. Size: 11.5 x 15.5 inches. Available for Purchase
Each issue of this over-sized magazine founded by Rei Kawakubo coincided with the launch of a new Comme des Garçons collection. The magazine emphasizes visuals with only limited text. It’s title, Sixth Sense, alludes to the power of intuition.
Nudes & Pin-Ups
Andy Warhol, Marilyn (1967), Castelli Graphics, Silkscreen Image Printed on Folded Card, 1981. Size: 7 x 7 inches. Available for Purchase
This card is not an offset print but rather an original silkscreen: in essence a miniature version of the much larger Marilyn silkscreen featured in this exhibition of Warhol prints. What started as a clever marketing tool — to give people something of value — has now become a rare Warhol collectible.
Julie Harvey, “Go Go” (Nude Portrait of Art Dealer Larry Gagosian), Card and Insert with Envelope, 2001. Size: 5.75 x 9.5 Inches. Available for Purchase
The feminist artist Julie Harvey attracted attention with a series of mailings featuring nude portraits of famous men such as, terrorist Osama Bin Laden, and art dealer Larry Gagosian. This card of Go Go (Gagosian’s nickname) was originally sent to art dealer Annina Nosei.
