ART/new york: A Video Magazine on Art, The 1982 – 1983 Art Season, Keith Haring, Nam June Paik, Brice Marden, Lee Krasner, Julian Schnabel, Robert Rauschenberg, 1983. Folded card. Size: 10.5 x 12.25 inches
This promotional mailer for Paul Tschinkel’s Art/new york, A Video Magazine on Art is a reminder of how dynamic the contemporary art scene was in the 1980s. Gallery 98’s Marc H. Miller was fortunate to experience all of it up close by providing the narration and interviewing artists for this pioneering videotape series.
The portable video camera was still a novelty in the early 1980s, and artists were eager to see how they and their art looked on television. A new generation of artists was making its debut, while successful artists from the 1960s and 70s were still going strong. At ART/new york, we had no trouble putting together exciting thematic programs covering the most compelling new exhibitions. In addition to the artists spotlighted on the ART/new york mailer above, these six programs also feature Joyce Kozloff, John Ahearn, Henry Geldzahler, David Byrne, MoMA video curator Barbara London, Jean-Michel Basquiat, James Rosenquist and others.
Much has changed in the forty years since these videotapes were made. What was once exciting because it was new, is now valued because it’s historic. The technology of video has also evolved, especially in terms of its distribution. Back then subscribers received video cassettes in the mail; now they can see ART/new York programs online through services like YouTube and Vimeo. What follows below can be interpreted as an update of the 1983 printed mailer above. Each of the six short video trailers promotes one of the 1982-1983 art season programs featured in the Art/new york brochure.
