The artist and musician Steven Parrino (1958–2005) identified as a “punk nihilist.” According to the Gagosian Gallery press release, the works in this exhibition were inspired by the phrase “painting is dead.” Parrino is quoted as having said, “I started engaging in necrophilia.”
