Christopher Wool’s poster for Hell Is You: The New Cinema 1979, a program of films that Wool curated at Printed Matter in 1994, is a reminder of the fascinating independent film movement that thrived in Lower Manhattan in the 1970s and 80s. Wool’s program centered around the films screened at the New Cinema, a short-lived venue on St. Mark’s Place funded by the artist group COLAB, and which mostly featured works by young directors from the art world rather than from film schools.
While few of these films were commercial successes, they provide a glimpse of the passions that fueled the East Village art scene during a creative highpoint. These low-budget, Super-8 productions embody the period’s do-it-yourself ethos, as well as, the fusion of art, music and club culture that animated the downtown scene. Many feature celebrity casts with downtown musicians and art-scene trendsetters.
Gallery 98 spotlights below a collection of vintage posters and flyers by East Village filmmakers. For additional posters as well as photographs taken on set, you can visit our 2019 online exhibition, No Wave and Independent Film.
