The Gagosian Gallery’s skillful use of promotional ephemera is evident in a 1992-93 series of exhibition announcement cards from a period when Larry Gagosian was just beginning to establish himself at the top of the competitive New York art world. While retaining his gallery in Los Angeles, Gagosian opened two New York spaces in quick succession: an uptown one at 980 Madison Ave. (1989), and the other one downtown on Wooster St. in Soho (1991). Accompanying this expansion was an aggressive effort to establish a blue-chip roster of both older established artists, and up-and-coming younger talents.
While most announcement cards in the 1990s featured a work of art, or merely the name of the artist, this series of Gagosian’s cards featured striking, black-and-white photographs of the artists at work in their studios. The portraits of Jasper Johns, Yves Kline, James Rosenquist, Barnett Newman, Mark Di Suvero, Peter Halley, and Philip Taafe sent a strong message. They not only glorified the artists, they also established, in the most personal way possible, the connection of these important artists to the emerging new gallery.
Gagosian, who started his career as a dealer of artist posters, always understood the importance of promotional materials. Today, his globe-spanning empire of nineteen galleries includes a large publishing division that produces his announcement cards, posters and catalogues, as well as, a quarterly magazine. All Gagosian ephemera is of interest and of the highest quality.
