With the whiff of impeachment once again in the air, Gallery 98 has resurrected its online exhibition Watergate Courtroom Sketches by Freda L. Reiter, 1973 – 75.
Back in the 1970s photography was prohibited in courtrooms, so it was up to sketch artists like Freda Reiter (1919-86) to provide the visuals for media coverage of legal proceedings. Although Richard Nixon resigned from the presidency to avoid impeachment, his collaborators and enablers (30 in total including his Chief of Staff and Attorney General), were all tried and convicted. Reiter covered these trials for ABC-TV, and the brief program segment below both shows how her drawings were used, and also provides an overview of some of the particulars of the Watergate story.
The Watergate trials marked a high point for the practice of courtroom illustration and Freda Reiter was one of the best in the field. The museum-worthy drawings being sold by Gallery 98 are priced from $1600 to $3200. |
