Gallery 98 has been sorting through our Andy Warhol ephemera with the goal of dividing it into two online collections. This first of these features items from before the artist’s death in February 1987. The second looks at posthumous Warhol ephemera from the time of his death to the present.
In Warhol’s case, the concept of ephemera is murky since he often worked in formats traditionally thought of as ephemeral. He started as a commercial illustrator hired to produce packaging and promotional materials, and in later years he devoted much of his creativity to mass-media projects with transitory appeal. Warhol loved ephemera and saved everything that crossed his path, items now preserved in “time capsules” at the Andy Warhol Museum.
